Phormictopus cancerides

(Latreille, 1806)

Haitian brown tarantula (terrestrial)
Caribbean
~ 7,5 cm bodylength
Longevity: ♀ ~ 20 years, ♂ ~ 5 years

This species, known as Haitian brown or Hispaniolan giant tarantula, is at least as defensive as it is beautiful. In the event of the smallest environmental stimulus, the animal immediately takes a defensive position, strikes with its front legs and usually does not seem averse to a bite. This spider is also active during the day, which is quite a pleasure to keep. It lives on Caribbean islands and accordingly does not hibernate. Up to 200 larvae can emerge from an egg sack.
